'You have the power' Mike German tells pupils

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 19th Oct 2006

Pupils should be taught about how democracy and politics empower them, that's the message from local Welsh Liberal Democrat AM Mike German today. Mr German is concerned about the low number of young people who choose to vote in elections at all levels.

Speaking before a Local Government Committee session on how democracy and politics are taught in Welsh schools, Mr German said:

"I go into schools in South Wales East on a regular basis to talk about how politics affects young people. I'm always shocked by the number of pupils who don't realise the impact political processes have on their lives.

"I always ask the classes I visit who they believe hold power and they are always surprised by the answer - they do.

"Democracy thrives when everybody plays a part. It thrives when everyone knows their rights and responsibilities, everyone elects their representatives and everyone holds them accountable. I want to see young people in Wales inspired to contribute and get involved."
