Police merger - Mike German comment
9.42.50am GMT Mon 6th Feb 2006
Commenting ahead of the expected police merger statement from Charles Clarke today, Mike German, Assembly leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said:
"This merger flies in the face of Welsh public opinion. People, politicians and the police authorities in Wales have expressed concerns about losing our local, neighbourhood policing. The Home Secretary has ignored this.
"We had a consultation which was a sham and pre-judged. This merger was pre-meditated and is a mistake. The move to a single, unwieldy force has been forced upon Wales by Home Office diktat. This rush to judgement will cost council taxpayers more money, there will be far less local influence and the speed of creating a single force means it cannot possible have been thought through properly.
"It appears that Wales is being used as a 'pilot' area for a superforce. Never mind pilots, what the people of Wales want is local, community policing with more bobbies on the beat."
