Axe must not fall on Newport Meals on Wheels - Mike German AM
4.40.10pm GMT Tue 3rd Jan 2006
Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for South Wales East, Mike German, has called on Newport Council to shelve plans to scrap Meals on Wheels in the city. The council is once again proposing to axe the popular service to save money. A similar proposal last year was overturned after a vocal campaign by volunteers, service users and supporters.
Mr German said: "Meal on Wheels provide a vital service to our community, delivering in excess of 5,000 meals a year, and we cannot afford to lose them. As well as delivering food, volunteers check on the well-being of pensioners and carry out other little errands.
"Of course, times do change and we have to be continually looking to see if services can be modernised and improved; however this does not mean scrapping any schemes which cost more than the price of a bag of chips. The way we treat the most vulnerable members of our communities is the mark of a civilised society. Newport Council must be persuaded once again that they should retain this vital service."
